The Judge - Trial by Jury

The first person to create a specific role in a G&S production has always fascinated me.  One of the first actors to make an impact on the world of G&S was Arthur Sullivan's brother - Fred.  He was in the very first Gilbert & Sullivan operetta - Thespis - when he took the part of Apollo (1871)  Fred went on to play the Judge in Trial by Jury  (1875) for 128 performances - Gilbert had planned for Fred to take the "patter" part in the next production but unfortunately Fred became ill and died shortly afterwards.  It was during the time that Arthur was looking after his brother that he composed the beautiful "Lost Chord"
